This is my first blog post and I would start with the most famous Arabic greeting “Al-Salamo-Alaykum”. This Arabic greeting is insanely wide-spread, that you will surely hear it everywhere many times a day if you are visiting an Arab country.
But before I start, I want to talk a bit about my project and why I choose to teach Arabic online.
How it all started?
My educational background was all engineering and technical – nothing related to languages!!. However, I was raised to love and respect my native Arabic language. This love has grown with the years to become a passion-filled with curiosity. As I left Egypt and traveled for studying and working aboard, my passion for my native language increased substantially, especially when I started to use other languages like English and German.
My love for Arabic was steady as a rock and deep like an ocean. I wanted to share my mother language with the world. For years, I have been dreaming to tutor Arabic online and help people understand, appreciate, learn and speak Arabic.
In 2017, the dream became real.
In 2017 I started my YouTube channel “Learn Arabic with Hamid” renamed later to “Linguamid”. Since then, I have been constantly publishing free content and building a wonderful community of Arabic learners worldwide. Then, I started recently my blog.
I am planning to do my best to help everyone out there struggling with learning Arabic. Accordingly, I am constantly posting free content on my YouTube channel and will also do here on my blog.
There are also premium resources with more condensed a specialized material that I collect and refine for you so that you focus solely on the effective learning process.
That being said, let’s start our first lesson.
What does this Arabic Greeting literally mean?
As I said, you will probably hear this Arabic greeting a zillion times a day if you are in an Arab country. The meaning is literally ‘Peace-be-upon-you’ and it is the religious “hello” in Arabic. That is, this is the religious greeting from Islam. With time it has become very popular and you will always hear this greeting from everyone everywhere and all the time!
This great greeting can be dissected as follows:
Al-Salam(o) السلام means “peace”
A’laykom عليكم means “on you” or “upon you”
Have a look at the video at the end of this post to see how I write and pronounce this wonderful greeting form.
Hope you know this greeting better by now. Follow along with my blog and channel here for more resources.
Have a nice day!
Salam, Hamid
