Now let’s read the ‘Setting an appointment in spoken Egyptian’ dialogue in English.
Good afternoon, my name is Mrs. Karima. I want to reserve an appointment for next week, please.
One moment, please. Next week is full – How about the one after?
Very good.
Tuesday at 3:00 pm is OK with you
Yes, it is ok.
Now let’s analyse some of the important keywords in this dialogue:
el-osboo3 el-gaay الأسبوع الجاي
The number ‘3’ here corresponds to the letter ‘ayn ع’ in Arabic. In Egyptian, the word ‘next’ or ‘coming’ means ‘el-gaay’. Accordingly, when I say ‘next week’, it means ‘el-osboo3 el-gaay’. I previously talked about the article ‘el-‘ in this blog article. Do you know the meaning of the word ‘kwayyes’?
‘kwayyes كويس’ is one of the mega-important keywords in spoken Egyptian dialect. This is because this word is very common and therefore you will hear it a lot in daily conversations, especially when you try to set an appointment in spoken Egyptian. So when you say ‘ana kwayyes أنا كويس’ it means: I am good or ok.
This dialogue gives two synonym meanings for the word ‘please’ – Did you spot them?
The word ‘please’ can mean the following phrases:
- Law sama7t لو سمحت
- Men fadlak من فضلك
So when you use either of these phrases, you will say ‘please’ in English. The Arabic language and spoken Egyptian are very rich, so you will have the chance to select among some synonym phrases like this one. Furthermore, some of the synonyms can give even shades of meaning, and this will be the subject of another article.
That is it for today.
I offer this dialogue along with native pronunciation as a bonus when you join my free basic Egyptian Arabic course. So why not giving it a try and tell me in the comments if you hear any of the keywords introduced in this dialogue before.
